Stammering

Some children go through a stage between the ages of 2 and 5 when they stammer, repeating certain sounds, words or phrases, prolonging them, or stopping in between sentences. Stammering is a form of dysfluency — an interruption in the flow of speech. In some children the dysfluencies may reduce on it's own but in other's timelt treatment is needed. Timely attention helps stop the problem from growing further. A consultation with a qualified audiologist-speech language pathologist will help in deciding the next step for your child.

Common questions about stammering

Your audiologist-speech language pathologist will guide you with the strategies to improve your child’s fluency. Apart from that, a few things that can be followed at home are:
  • Avoid corrections or criticisms. However well-intentioned, they will only make your child feel more self-conscious.
  • Maintain natural eye contact with your child. Try not to look away or show signs of being upset.
  • Do not interrupt, let your child speak for himself or herself and finish thoughts and sentences.
Absolutely yes. Stammering (or stuttering) is best and most effectively managed through speech therapy.
